I made a run to Ocean State Job Lot to get a new bathroom rug, as mine was beyond saving. Yuck. Got a nice green rag rug for three bucks. I love Job Lot! I also had to give up on the fun "Happy Halloween" rug I had in the kitchen, which had funky witch hats on it. :(
Fortunately, that's the extent of the losses. I can deal with the loss of a couple of little rugs.
I also bought a soy orange-vanilla candle there that made the apartment smell much nicer. I love the smell of oranges!
I watched one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who from On Demand: "The Girl in the Fireplace." Love that one. "I just snogged Madame de Pompadour!" *g*
Then I took a nap. Aaaahhhhh.
I made the meatloaf that I was going to make yesterday, and it came out quite scrumptious. I haven't made meatloaf in ages. So long, in fact, that I almost forgot the onion until the last minute. D'oh!
Even with the scrubbing and washing, it was still better than being at work. :)

When I got home, guess what? More flooding. I threw the last of my towels on the floor and started bailing. Yes, bailing. So much for cooking a nice dinner! It's Stouffer's for me tonight, and more bailing.
I just heard the sound of pumps, and sure enough, the water company is here clearing the drains. Hooray! I hope the water goes down on its own, so I don't have to bail any more. Taking a break for food now.
Tomorrow, I have to wash all my towels with Lysol, and clean up. Just what I wanted to do on my vacation. :P

I guess I'll have to wait until Monday to chill, but that's OK. I will appreciate it more then. :)
As of now, I am on vacation. Woo hoo! That also makes me happy. I really needed a break. This weekend looks to be a nice one, which bodes well for a walk in the woods on Sunday with
I got my Armata's gift certificate today from the big boss (they used to give us a turkey gift certificate, but the farm went out of business), so I headed over there on my lunch break and loaded up on stuff. I got one of their amazing chicken pies (that'll be 6 or 7 dinners), some ground beef and boneless pork chops (I almost never buy meat), and some nice bread pudding. Ooh, and some fig cookies (homemade). Yum.
Just trying to decide if I have time to watch Star Trek before Monk comes on. I think I do.

Also? Jimmy Fallon is not funny. Just sayin'.
The day ended with me cranky, too, thanks to the person I asked (at 4:00) to make me a proof, which she handed to me at 5:00 as I was shutting off my computer and grabbing my coat. Grr.
I shrugged off the cranky in the car and sang along with the radio the whole way home.
I have Star Trek in my hot little hands, but I won't watch it tonight because FlashForward is on. Yes, I am still watching that. It has Jack Davenport and Dominic Monaghan, why in the world wouldn't I? *g* It's no LOST, but it's still loads better than most of what's on the telly these days. Oh, and I heard today that LOST will be back February 2nd, and will air on Tuesdays at 9. Whee! Anyhoo, I will probably check out the DVD and see what extras are there. I've seen the outtakes, and they're pretty funny.
One more day. One more, and then I am on vacation. I can do it!
- Mood:
tired
Then I got an email from Netflix, letting me know that Star Trek is on its way to me. Squee! I think I'll keep this one for a few days, and watch it a few times. I was afraid I wouldn't get it for at least a month, but somehow my timing was just right. Yay!
The niece is performing in The Wiz this weekend. Anyone want to go to the matinee on Saturday with me? It's in Canton. I plan to go to the SEF coffeehouse from there.
Also, I am on vacation next week, and available for hikes, movies, or coffee with locals. Anyone up for a couple hours of fun? Let me know!

Then I had a lady come in and tell me how nice it is outside, and I should go out. Um, yeah. I'll get right on that. :P
Then I had a woman call, and then come in, wanting to place an ad for a friend whose daughter gave away the dog while she was in the hospital. I got the whole sordid story, including the daughter's alcoholism. Really TMI. I managed to whittle it down from 53 words to 24 while avoiding any possible lawsuits, and then she said thanks, I'll tell my friend. That's at least half an hour of my life that I'd like back, please.
I'm hoping to get through the remaining 15 minutes of the workday without having to deal with any loonies. Please?

This is the photo I wanted to take for the boston.com November contest. Isn't this a great tree?
I got the rest of today's pix up; you can see the rest of them here.
The sun came out for a little while today, and of course I took advantage of it by taking lots of pictures. The roses are still blooming (!), and still drenched from yesterday's rain.
My computer gave up processing pix after only a few, so here's some of what I took today.
( drenched )
It felt even warmer than the weather dude said it was. There were a ton of birds in the woods, including some very vocal crows. I love watching them fly around, teasing each other with their aeronautic acrobatics. The chipmunks and squirrels were also quite active, dashing around on the ground and in the trees. There were also a lot of folks out enjoying the nice day: couples, kids, families, and lots of dogs.
The leaves on the paths are turning to mulch, ground under countless feet. In some places, where the path was wetter, they squeaked under my boots.
It wasn't as muddy as I'd expected after yesterday's rain, but I was glad I wore boots instead of sneakers.
After coming home for some lunch, I went out again and took some pix next door at the cemetery. The sweetgum and one maple still had colorful leaves. It was curiously still there though, as if life was off playing somewhere else and leaving it for the dead.
OK, in the middle of posting this I glanced out the window and saw a gorgeous sunset, so I ran out and took more pictures. Maybe I will fight with the 'puter after all. *g*
I went out for a walk today, despite the rain. It was only misting at that point, so a hat was sufficient for keeping the rain out of my eyes. The sidewalks were littered with yellow leaves, and I had to navigate around puddles, so my eyes were cast downward for much of my walk. I went downtown, and out E. Main as far as the sidewalk went, then crossed the street and headed back; about two miles round trip. The streetlights were already coming on as I neared home, and thankfully the heavy rain didn't return. I was only slightly damp, easily fixed by a change of clothing and some hot herbal tea.
Here is how November looks in my mind, taken a couple of years ago, on Thanksgiving I think:

Misty, grey, and bare. A very melancholy month.

Thank goodness Kim is back tomorrow. One more week, and then I am on vacation! I am so looking forward to getting a break from the office. Cross your fingers for me that the weather is good, so I can get outside and take lots of pictures.

At least there were no bitchy readers or people carted away in ambulances today.
A big thank you to all veterans out there, both past and present. My dad was in the Navy, and most of my uncles served in the Army, some of them in various wars. They were all proud to serve their country. It's because of people like them that we are free.
23 years ago today, I moved to Massachusetts. Almost half my life ago. Sometimes it feels like I've been here forever, and sometimes it feels like it can't possibly have been that long.
A little while later, I heard the heartbreaking sound of a kid pleading with his mother as they carted him away in an ambulance. He was in hysterics. One of our tenants is a therapist, and I assume that's where he came from. I don't even want to know the details of that situation. :(
I think I'll make some apple crisp now. That sounds nice and comforting.

Yes, there are still roses blooming in Stanley Park! Not many, and a lot of them are pretty sad looking, but there is beauty still in the rose garden.
( horses, herons, and more )
I did three loads of laundry (!) when I got home, and went for another walk. What a gorgeous day!
The theatre complex was pretty busy, which surprised me. I had to park pretty far out in the lot. It's a nice Saturday afternoon, and who knows how many more of those we'll get this year? The theatre itself was about half full.
The movie was fun, quite enjoyable. I had a good time, and laughed a lot. It's funny but not stupid, and George, Ewan, and Jeff Bridges were all up to their usual level. I'm not really a fan of Kevin Spacey, but he played an unlikeable character, so that worked for me. There were some fun in-jokes (Ewan MacGregor's character didn't know what a Jedi was), and the flashbacks full of New Age hokeyness made me giggle quite a bit. I know people who believe all this stuff. I may be a Witch, but I have a healthy sense of skepticism. ;)
Plus, the goats were cute. Thumbs up for The Men Who Stare at Goats.
I saw another preview for a flick that I think is called Pirate Radio, and that looks to be fun as well. Also, Jack Davenport (Norrington from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) is in it, and I think I have a crush on him. I don't know if it's his voice, the accent, or what, but my antennae go up whenever I see him in something. (Don't worry, George is still #1)
Lest you think I didn't get out and enjoy the nice weather today, let me assure you that I took a nice walk down to the library, where I got out
I'm hoping that we get a nice sunset tomorrow, too; this month's contest on boston.com's RAW is silhouettes, and the photo must be taken this month. I have a tree in mind that would make a nice silhouette against a sunset.
I'm very much looking forward to the weekend, especially since it's supposed to be sunny and nice, especially on Sunday. Expect pictures!
What are you all up to this weekend?

A couple more people have a new appreciation of everything I do.
One of our vendors brought in donuts and pastries from Dunkin' Donuts this morning. That was nice of them. Munchkins, FTW!
I discovered (now that it's dark when I get out of work) that one of my headlights was out. My regular repair guy replaced it for me at lunch today, and only charged me for the bulb. :)
The art room was in a tizzy today, trying to get the holiday gift guide off to the printers. It was supposed to go at noon, and they were still working on it when I left a five. A few people dropped the ball on that one! I'm really glad I wasn't involved in that kerfuffle. The graphics manager, Beth, couldn't even talk about it; she's usually a Chatty Cathy! It's got to be really bad to make her speechless.

As befitting the first day of the Celtic New Year, it looked (and felt, at least energetically) like winter. Most of the trees are bare, or nearly so. The ground crackles with dry leaves, and the light slants through the woods.
( fungi & fey )
Now begins the dark half of the year, as the sun sets earlier and earlier. Tomorrow, it will be dark when I get out of work. Time to retreat inward, and rest for the next cycle. Blessed be!
It's here, it's here! My favorite holiday of the year. Happy New Year to all my Pagan friends, and to all my muggle friends: watch out for the spooks, and don't eat too much candy! *g*
Today's Halloween socks are my favorite ones. I lurve these socks. I sometimes wear them at other times besides Halloween, but today they are perfect.
Yes, Edgar still lives on my desk. I brought him in a few years back for Halloween, and he liked it here so much I let him stay. It reminds my coworkers that I'm not quite exactly like they are. *g*
My brother gave Edgar to me when he worked in a bookstore, where he was part of a display. Does my bro know me, or what?

I'm looking into doing a calendar that people can order if they want one. I'm still not in a position to be able to afford having them made as gifts, or even to sell, but one of those print-to-order places might be the way to go. Would anyone be interested in buying one if I do?

Between my coworker having to leave this morning due to the passing of her father, and the rainy weather, it was a long day trapped inside the office.
Even though it was expected, and possibly even a relief (he had Alzheimer's), poor Kim was a bit of a mess. She was upset because he was alone, but our boss pointed out (and she could be right) that he might have wanted it that way, to spare his family having to witness his passing.
Another soul to pass through the veil this weekend. Safe journey, and blessed be.
I went out for a walk this morning, layered up in fleece as it was quite chilly. I went up a street I'd never been on before, and found a pleasant path along the river that I didn't know was there. It came out in the backyard of a service station that had horses behind it, only a couple of blocks from Grandmothers' Garden, which is a short walk from home. Yay for new walking paths!
After lunch and puttering around the house, I went out into the gloom again for a walk in the cemetery. Tomorrow's rain will likely knock down much of the foliage, so I figured I'd take advantage while I could. Not the best environment for taking pictures, but whatever. It's still pretty, and kind of seasonably murky.
If you have Comcast, they have some episodes of Doctor Who, and the whole series of The Prisoner on On Demand! I watched The Christmas Invasion during lunch. :)
